St. Moritz, 31 January 2016. For the first time, Rommy Gianni’s Team Maserati won the
Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz’ Cartier Trophy with a 4:5 victory over Team Cartier in
the Final. 13’000 spectators and more than 100 members of the media delighted in
watching polo being played at a level rarely seen on snow to date.

«Every match this year was like a final» said Maserati’s patron Rommy Gianni after his
team’s victory in Sunday’s Final against Team Cartier. Maserati’s victory marked the end of
the dominance of Team Cartier who had won the coveted «Cartier Trophy» three years in a
row. Maserati and Cartier had made their ambitions clear from the beginning of the games.
The first match of the tournament had been between the three year consecutive winners,
Cartier and the Swiss cross Brazil team, Perrier-Jouët, with a 6-3 win for the more
experienced all-English Cartier team. Match two was more hotly contended with a 3-2 win
from Rommy Gianni’s Maserati over Melissa Ganzi’s Badrutt’s Palace Hotel team.
The action continued Saturday 30 as Badrutt’s Palace Hotel celebrated their first win after an
exciting, five chukka match, which finished 6-5 thanks to Mariano Gracida’s golden goal. Also
running into an extra chukka, the match between Cartier and Maserati was won 5-4 by
Cartier after Gonzalez scored the all-important golden goal. They may have lost out this time
but Maserati were still smiling. Due to their victory in the direct encounter with Badrutt’s
Palace Hotel, they still went through to the Final, to be played against Cartier—Sunday was
to see the same pairings as Saturday.
After four high-class games under bright blue skies played against the breathtaking backdrop
of the Engadine mountains came the social highlight of the event: at Saturday’s Snow Polo
Night, the polo family celebrated into the early hours, starting in the Badrutt’s Palace hotel’s
packed ballroom to then move on to the hotel's King’s Club. On Sunday, back on the lake of
St. Moritz, the spectators gathered around the polo field and cheered the teams on
enthusiastically despite the somewhat drizzly weather.
Subsidiary Final: Badrutt’s Palace Hotel vs Perrier-Jouët
As was the case in Saturday's match between Badrutt’s Palace Hotel and Perrier-Jouët, the
presence of the Argentine 9 goaler Tincho Merlos made all the difference and was crucial to
securing them another win for the La Martina Cup. It was Merlos who scored the first goal for
the blues and Merlos who answered Perrier-Jouët’s first goal with a beautiful solo run down
the field, to bring the score to 2-1 at the end of chukka two.

The third chukka saw Perrier-Jouët equalise, 2-2, from a spot penalty but they couldn’t quite
get an advantage as the fouls kept coming. A safety 60 for the blues looked to be going wide
but Gaudenzi plucked it out of the air and sent it whizzing neatly through the posts. The
chukka ended 4-3 thanks to another goal from Merlos and an answering goal for Perrier-
Jouët.
The yellow team didn’t take advantage of their two penalties in the final chukka, sending
them both wide to the right allowing Badrutt’s Palace Hotel a chance to widen the gap and
move to safety with another goal from Merlos, ending the match 5-3. Ganzi, Merlos,
Gaudenzi and Gracida lifted the La Martina Cup high in triumph.
Final for The Cartier Trophy – Maserati vs Cartier
Maserati the mighty have broken the spell of Chris Hyde and his Cartier team by winning the
Final of the Snow Polo World Cup St Moritz for The Cartier Trophy. Saturday’s game had
been tough, but the Musso and Menendes duo, with the support of Vazquez and Gianni, had
learnt a tough lesson about how to navigate round Hyde and Gonzalez on the ice.
The first chukka set the tone for the remainder of the game with Hyde and Gonzalez
powering through the wall of Maserati white shirts to score the first two goals of the game.
Maserati’s Musso scored two goals to answer the Cartier lead and end the chukka on a tie,
2-2.
The second chukka was tough for both sides, with only one goal scored by Menendes to take
Maserati into the lead. Cartier managed to win five penalties but failed to score with any of
them, Maserati only won a single penalty in the whole chukka. Gonzalez and Hyde broke
away on a number of occasions to show the crowd their powerful ponies but the Maserati
defence followed their weekend-long strategy – shut down the top players at all costs. The
first half of the game ended with Maserati in the lead, 3-2.
Cartier’s Gonzalez started the penultimate chukka with a penalty. The powdery uneven
surface was hard work for the players and the ponies and a few critical errors from the threetime
winners Cartier, meant that Maserati were able to extend their lead to 5-2 going into the
final chukka. The play was speckled with beautiful team work from Cartier, with each player
passing to one another, up and down the field. Hyde managed to convert two penalties to
close the gap 5-4.
With just one minute left on the clock, Cartier looked as though they would equalise and take
the game into an extra chukka. But it was not to be - Maserati remained hot on their heels,
maintaining the pressure right down to the last second, to win the 32nd Snow Polo World
Cup St Moritz.

for the fifth time in 2017. In 1985, the first ever polo tournament on snow was held here. The

«Jedes Spiel war wie ein Endspiel»
St. Moritz, 31. Januar 2016. Mit einem 4:5 Finalsieg über das Team Cartier sicherte sich
das Team Maserati des Italieners Rommy Gianni zum ersten Mal die Cartier Trophy
des Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz. 13’000 begeisterte Zuschauer und weit über 100
Medienschaffende sahen Polosport auf einem Niveau, das man auf Schnee kaum je
gesehen hatte.
«Jedes Spiel war wie ein Endspiel», sagte Maserati Teampatron Rommy Gianni nach dem
Sieg seines Teams gegen das Team Cartier. Der Sieg von Maserati beendete die Dominanz
des Team Cartier, welches die begehrte «Cartier Trophy» über drei Jahre in Folge
gewonnen hatte. Maserati und Cartier hatten ihre Ambitionen auf einen Turniersieg bereits in
den ersten Spielen am Freitag klar gemacht.
Den Auftakt des Turniers hatten die dreifachen Sieger Cartier und das schweizerischbrasilianische
Team Perrier-Jouët mit einem 6:3 Sieg für das erfahrenere Team Cartier
gemacht. Das zweite Spiel war stärker umkämpft und endete mit einem 3:2 Sieg von
Maserati über das Badrutt’s Palace Hotel Team von Melissa Ganzi. Am Samstag gelang
Badrutt’s Palace Hotel dann der erste Sieg in einem spannenden Spiel über fünf Chukkas:
Mariano Gracida schoss das entscheidende Golden Goal zum 6:5.
Auch in der vierten Begegnung des Turniers gab es ein fünftes Chukka. Hier war es
Gonzalez, der das Golden Goal erzielte und so das Spiel für Cartier mit 5:4 gegen Maserati
gewann. Trotz der Niederlage konnte Maserati zufrieden sein. Dank ihres Sieges in der
direkten Begegnung gegen Badrutt’s Palace Hotel konnten sie sich auf das Endspiel freuen.
Der Sonntag würde dieselben Paarungen sehen wie der Samstag.
Nach vier hochklassigen Spielen unter blauem Himmel vor der einmaligen Kulisse der
Engadiner Berge stand am Samstagabend der gesellschaftliche Höhepunkt an: An der Snow
Polo Night feierte die Polo Familie im voll besetzten Ballsaal und dem King’s Club des
Badrutt’s Palace Hotel bis in die frühen Morgenstunden. Zurück auf dem St. Moritzersee
verteilten sich die Zuschauer am Sonntag rund um das Spielfeld und feuerten die
Mannschaften trotz des nun etwas unfreundlichen Wetters frenetisch an.
Kleiner Final: Badrutt’s Palace Hotel - Perrier-Jouët
Wie schon am Vortag war der argentinische 9-Goaler «Tincho» Merlos matchentscheidend
und sicherte Badrutt’s Palace Hotel im kleinen Final einen weiteren Sieg. Nachdem er schon
das erste Tor erzielt hatte, konterte er das Gegentor von Perrier-Jouët mit einem herrlichen
Solo-Ritt entlang der Bande und erzielte das 2:1.
Perrier-Jouët gelang im dritten Chukka durch einen Penalty der Ausgleich zum 2:2. In einem
von Fouls geprägten Spiel gelang es den Gelben jedoch nicht, in Führung zu gehen. Es
folgte ein «Safety 60» (das Äquivalent einer Ecke) für die Blauen, der das Tor verfehlt hätte,
hätte ihn Gaudenzi nicht in der Luft abgefangen und sauber zwischen die Torpfosten
umgelenkt. Nach einem weiteren Tor von Merlos und einer Replik von Perrier-Jouët endete
das Chukka 4:3 für Badrutt’s Palace Hotel.

Im letzten Chukka vergaben die Gelben gleich zwei Penalties. Badrutt’s Palace Hotel witterte
Siegesluft und besiegelte den Endstand von 5:3 mit einem Tor von Merlos. Ganzi, Merlos,
Gaudenzi und Gracida gewannen den La Martina Cup.
Endspiel um die Cartier Trophy: Maserati vs Cartier
Das Spiel von Samstag war hart gewesen, doch das Maserati-Duo Musso-Menendes,
unterstützt von Vazquez und Gianni, hatte seine Lehren daraus gezogen und wusste, wie
Hyde und Gonzalez auf dem Schnee zu umschiffen waren. Hyde und Gonzalez
durchbrachen gleich zu Beginn je einmal die Mauer der Maserati-Spieler in weiss und
schossen je ein Tor. Musso erwiderte mit zwei Toren für Maserati und glich zum Ende des
ersten Chukka auf 2:2 aus.
Das zweite Chukka war für beide Seiten schwierig—es gab nur ein Tor von Menendes für
Maserati. Cartier erhielt insgesamt fünf Penalties, konnte aber keinen verwandeln; Maserati
erhielt lediglich einen Penalty im gesamten Chukka. Gonzalez und Hyde konnten dank ihrer
kräftigen Pferde einige Male ausbrechen, doch die Verteidiger von Maserati hielten an der
Strategie fest, die sie das ganze Wochenende über verfolgt hatten: die besten gegnerischen
Spieler um jeden Preis gedeckt zu halten. Zum Ende der ersten Halbzeit lag Maserati mit 3:2
in Führung.
Zu Beginn des dritten Chukka gab es einen Penalty für Gonzalez von Cartier. Das
mittlerweile mehlige und etwas unebene Spielfeld erschwerte das Spiel für Spieler und
Pferde. Dank einiger entscheidender Fehler des dreimaligen Gewinners Cartier konnte
Maserati zum Start ins vierte Chukka die Führung auf 5:3 ausbauen. Cartier zeigte
wiederholt ein schönes Zusammenspiel, die Spieler gaben sich den Ball hin und her, das
Feld hinrauf und herunter. Hyde verwandelte zwei Penalties und konnte den Rückstand noch
auf 5:4 verkürzen.
Eine Minute vor Schluss schien es gar, als ob Cartier ausgleichen und das Spiel in ein
Zusatz-Chukka bringen würde. Doch es sollte nicht sein—Maserati blieb den «roten Teufeln»
hart auf den Fersen, hielt bis zur letzten Sekunde den Druck aufrecht und trug den Sieg um
den 32. Snow Polo World Cup St. Moritz – und damit die Cartier Trophy – davon.
