Twenty four teams prepare for Pommery Archie David Cup battle
UK’s leading eight-goal polo tournament runs from 7-30 June
The Archie David Cup has been played at Guards since 1958 and is named after a leading player/patron of the 1950s who had his own Friar Park team, Major Archie David. Today The Archie David Cup is considered the leading 8-goal tournament in the country and attracts Britain’s leading low-goal teams. It always provides plenty of tough competition - so tough in fact that only a couple of squads have ever won this trophy more than once in the Cup’s 55-year history. They are Les Lions and Tayto.
Some 24 teams have entered this year’s tournament, which is, once again, sponsored by the leading champagne house Pommery. This sponsorship continues the brand’s much valued commitment to polo at Guards Polo Club, including an esteemed Corporate Partnership.
This year’s Pommery Archie David Cup starts on Friday 7 June and all 24 teams will have to produce their best form in the qualifying stages in order to reach the final, which will be held at Guards Polo Club on Sunday 30 June. On Finals Day itself, the winners of the subsidiary final will receive the Caterham Cup and a concurrent tournament, open to Guards Polo Club teams only who are knocked out in the qualifying stages of the Pommery Archie David, will compete for the Claude Pert Cup
Pommery: The House of Pommery is one of the most prestigious names in champagne and is synonymous with elegance and finesse. Pommery & Greno was established in 1836, but it was the entrepreneurial Jeanne-Alexandrine Louise Pommery, who took over the running of the business in 1858, following the unexpected death of her husband, that made sure that the Pommery name and reputation became internationally recognised. Madame Pommery is credited with launching the first commercially successful “Brut’” Champagne, Pommery Brut Nature 1874, at a time when champagne was excessively sweetened with sugar. Today, our champagne is expertly crafted by Chef de Cave, Thierry Gasco who is only the ninth cellarmaster to create Pommery champagne. The Vranken Pommery Monopole group is very proud of its partnership with Guards Polo Club.
Guards Polo Club is situated in the heart of Windsor Great Park. Europe’s leading polo club, it boasts 10 grounds, two Royal Boxes and an elegant Clubhouse. The Club was founded by HRH Prince Philip in 1955 and he remains President of the Guards Polo Club to this day, taking an active interest in all events at the Club. Guards Polo Club hosts some 500 matches throughout the season, which runs from late April to mid September. Tournaments include several prestigious competitions, including the high-goal Cartier Queen’s Cup, Al Habtoor Royal Windsor Cup, Jack Wills Varsity Polo, Ganjam Jaipur Trophy Day, Laureus Polo Day, Pommery Archie David Cup and the Audi International Polo, which this year features England v USA for the historic Westchester Cup
